STATE AND FINANCING OF THE WASTE SECTOR IN THE SOUTH-WESTERN REGION OF REPUBLIC OF BULGARIA

ABSTRACT Waste management is one of the main priority areas for achieving sustainable development, especially in the light of transition to a circular economy. As the most populated economic region, due to the inclusion of the capital in its territorial scope, the Southwestern region is naturally the region generating the largest amount of household waste in the country. The paper examines development of ecological infrastructure in the field of waste in its territorial scope against the background of the general tendencies in waste generation and management in the EU and in Bulgaria. Having in mind the significant amount of necessary investments in the sector, attention is also paid to the subsidies granted to increase the efficiency of waste management through the construction of appropriate systems and facilities.
